DIY Eco-Friendly Gift Bows, Candles and Mulled Spices
Traditional gift bows can be wasteful, unoriginal and expensive. This fun-to-make and unique alternative has your presents looking almost too good to open!
Dehydrating
I had a multipurpose plan for these eco-friendly gift bows during the holiday season that required a smaller size, so while I used clementines, really any fruit or vegetable would work! Lemons and limes would be bright and fun for spring and summer with some mint. Or tomatoes with some basil in the summer and fall.
If you own a dehydrator then proceed on with your bad self. If you’re like me, here’s the good ole’ oven method!
- Preheat oven 200 degrees
- Layer thinly sliced fruits/vegetables on reusable baking sheet or parchment paper
- Place fruit/vegetable trays on top third and bottom third of oven
- Turn slices over every hour for 2-4 hours until stiff and dry — remove sooner if darkening
Building the bow
You can use any aromatic spices that also hold together well for sturdiness — I used cinnamon and star of anise, but dried or fresh plants are beautiful!
Using your dried fruits and veggies plus your decorative spices and plants, you can create any composition and hold it together with floral wire, or using clear, non-flammable glue. I used hot glue, but Elmer’s or E6000 would work as well.
Add some wax in any shape with a wick for a DIY candle kit!
The final eco-friendly gift bow can be glued to a gift, or a square scrap of paper that can then be glued or taped to present.

As if these bows couldn't get any better -- they can do more than just glam up your gift!
Mulling
For some home aromas, mull the spices from the gift bow! Toss in a pot, cover with water, and let simmer all day on low (keep adding water to keep from burning) and add your own vanilla or cloves for an aromatic boost.
DIY Gift Bow Candle Making
- Melt wax in microwave on high in 1 minute intervals
- Add your favorite essential oils — or make your own!
- Add wick to inside of jar and secure on bottom with clear, non-flammable glue
- Pour into any small jar you have around your home — rest any kind of stick across top temporarily to hold wick in place while drying
- The bow can be used to decorate the outside of your jar, or, if you’re able to make a core candle, you can glue the bow elements to the inside of the jar using clear, non-flammable glue
DIY Candle Fragrance Oil
- Add 1 cup oil (I used vegetable oil) and left over citrus and spices to mason jar with lid
- Smash, mash and shake ingredients to combine
- Cover jar with canning lid and add to water filled crockpot
- Cover crockpot and let simmer on low for 4 hours
- After cooled, replace center metal lid with cheese cloth and strain
- Add oil to melted candle wax for fragrance
Core Candle
A core candle is a pre-made candle that is slightly smaller than your final jar. It’s created first, placed in the center of your jar, and additional wax is placed around it. That way, when the candle burns, it will burn down the center leaving the sides less disturbed and prone to torching.
To prevent fire and serious injury: burn candle within sight. Keep-out of reach of children and pets. Never burn candle on or near anything that can catch fire.
